I started my web publishing journey in 1997. Things were much different then. The web was different. Hosting was different, browsers were different. Upload and download speeds were measured in kbps. Building a dynamic web site that presented different things based on a database and user input was bleeding edge technology.

Now, I'm building this page using technologies that were science fiction in 1997, but in some ways, some things have gone full circle: from static pages, to dynamic websites for nearly a decade (remember LAMP?), then back to static pages.

  • cactus was my first website (1997), hosted on my local ISP and built with custom Perl scripts that converted SGML to HTML.
  • Then I moved to collage (1998), hosted on xoom.com.
  • And later, I updated it to collage2, the next iteration (1999), also hosted on xoom.com.
  • vrypan|net|radio, hosted my podcast from January 2005 to January 2006, when it was merged with my blog.

There was also magaz, a collaborative Linux magazine in Greek that some friends and I started publishing in 1997, using the same SGML2HTML tools I used for my website. Magaz continued even after the original team stopped working on it, but the layout remained practically unchanged.
