My OS X favorites

Here are my favorite Open Source apps for OS X, the ones I would install imediately after a fresh OS X installation:

- iTerm terminal emulator.
- Chicken of the VNC, VNC client
- Seashore, GIMP-based OS X app for image manipulation.
- D-Subtitler (extract subtitles from DVD), D-Vision (GUI for mencoder/mplayer) and D-Volution (encode .mov and .dv files in Divx/Xvid or h264) from ObjectifMac
- NeoOffice, a port of OpenOffice.org to the OS X
- Firefox
- Fire an IM client supporting ICQ, MSN, Y!IM, etc..
- MPlayer OS X
- BitTorrent
- Cyberduck a nice ftp/sftp client.

Of course, if you are into UNIX/Linux you will feel much more at home by installing Darwin Ports

  1. Check also this out. I didn’t try it yet, but it’s free and it must be better that the “chicken of the VNC” which is not the best screen sharing program out there.
My list contains also SuperDuper. The free version has only the very basic functionality. I find the full version very cheap and definitely worth its money.

Yes but ScreenShare is not based on a standard, or is it? Is there a client for Linux and other Unices? Is there a server for other platforms?

Chicken of the VNC is a VNC client. Wich means I can use it to control any (OS X, Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc.) machine has a VNC server installed…

  3. The only suggestion I have for Chicken of the VNC is to implement TightVNC‘s extensions, which seem good and useful. Also, if you’re just using console applications, check out GNU screen (short overview/tutorial).

As for iTerm … I still use xterm with screen and a tabbed window manager.

I encourage my students who will soon be in colllege thus relatively impecunious ;-) to use freeware and shareware whenever possible. Your list is exactly the same as mine with the exception of Seashore which I will quickly remedy and iTerm.

On my side, I suggest SubEthaEdit and FreeMind. I’m guessing that MySql and Php are a given, right? We put Greasemonkey into Firefox to make it more fun.

Instead of Fire I would suggest you also check out Adium. It also supports lots of protocols (AIM, MSN, Jabber, Google Talk, yada nada), and it’s also free. I strongly suggest it!
